The history of Instagram can be traced back to early 2010 when Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger were working at Google. The first version of Burbn was released in October 2010. The app allowed users to take pictures on their phones and then share them with friends through an online community. Users could also browse photos from other users and "check-in" at locations around town using GPS technology. The app had some success but ultimately failed because it lacked clear goals and direction; many users found it difficult to navigate through all the different features offered by the app.
After his company's failure with Burbn, Systrom turned his attention toward another project: Instagram. He drew inspiration from popular photo-sharing sites like Flickr and Hipstamatic.
